IMPORTANT: Google SSL Certificate Announcement Likely to Affect Your Website

A recent announcement by Google has shaken the world of website design and development and as a website owner, you need to know about it.

It's no secret that Google is slowly but surely taking over the authoritative role on web standards across the World Wide Web. For the most part, Google's intentions are good but website owners need to be aware of the changes, as it could greatly affect the traffic that your website generates.

Not long ago, Google announced "Mobilegeddon" a new protocol that "punishes" websites that are not mobile friendly. Now, Google are looking to do the same with websites that do not make use of SSL certificates.

What Are SSL Certificates?

SSL Certificates are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic key to an organization's details. When installed on a web server, it activates the padlock and the https protocol that allows secure connections from a web server to a browser. Typically, SSL is used to secure sensitive data like credit card transactions, data transfers and logins.

Your business needs to install the SSL Certificate onto your web server to initiate a secure session with browsers. Once a secure connection is established, all website traffic between the web server and the web browser will be secure.

Why Is This Announcement Important?

This announcement by Google is really important for most website owners - if your websites requires a password to log in, or if you run an e-commerce website and users access your website via Chrome, then Google will display a message to users that your website is not safe and secure unless it has a SSL Certificate installed.

To avoid losing ranking points and website visitors that browse in Chrome, you need to get an SSL Certificate installed before January 2017.

To get a head-start on your competition, you should ensure that your website is secure and has a SSL Certificate installed as soon as possible.
